Mexican painting commemorating the 15th of September 1820 when Mexico won its Independence from Spain after a 16 year struggle. The 15th and the 16th of September  are celebrated every year as Mexican Independence Day. The eagle with the serpent in it’s beak standing on a Nopal cactus symbolizes the founding of Mexico by the Aztecs that had been prophesied when they set out in search of the promised land.
